Historical context

Eugenius was a Western Roman emperor from 392 to 394 who was not recognised by the Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius I. Though Christian himself, Eugenius restored the Altar of Victory and replaced administrators with loyal supporters, including pagans, before being captured and executed at the Battle of the Frigidus on 6 September 394. This gold solidus was struck under him between AD 392 and AD 394 at Lugdunum, an important Roman city in Gaul and capital of Gallia Lugdunensis.
