Historical context
Eugenius served as Western Roman emperor between 392 and 394, though he went unrecognized by the Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius I. A Christian who gained backing by appealing to discontent with Theodosius' religious policies towards pagans, Eugenius restored the Altar of Victory and rebuilt the Temple of Venus and Roma. His short reign concluded when he was captured and executed after the Battle of the Frigidus in 394. This bronze coin was produced at Lugdunum, an essential Roman city in Gaul established in 43 BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus.
