Historical context

Valentinian I served as Roman emperor from 364 to 375, founding the Valentinian dynasty after being proclaimed ruler following Jovian's death. Although he briefly governed the whole Roman Empire, he soon appointed his brother Valens to oversee the East while he retained control of the Western Roman Empire. Operating in the West, Valentinian conducted extensive military campaigns across the Rhine and Danube frontiers against the Alamanni, Quadi, and Sarmatians.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this coin represents the siliqua, a small, thin silver denomination produced in the Roman Empire from the fourth century onwards. Modern numismatic convention applies the term siliqua to these Roman silver pieces on the premise that they were valued at one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus. The coin's obverse bears the imperial title "D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the legend "RESTITV-TOR REIP" alongside an image of the emperor holding a labarum and a Victory on a globe.
