Semissis in gold struck at Mediolanum under Magnus Maximus, AD 387–AD 388, catalogued as RIC IX Mediolanum 17. Obverse: Bust of Flavius Victor, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Victory seated right on cuirass, inscribing VOT/V/MVLT/X on shield held up by Genius. Obverse legend: D N FL VIC-TOR P F AVG. Reverse legend: VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM.

Historical context

Flavius Victor was the son of Magnus Maximus, a Western Roman usurper who rose up against Gratian in 383 and gained recognition from Theodosius I. Victor was elevated to augustus and ruled as co-emperor alongside his father from either 383/384 or mid-387 until August 388. Following Maximus's invasion of Italy in 387 to depose Valentinian II, Theodosius defeated and executed Maximus in August 388, which was swiftly followed by Victor's execution in Trier. Mediolanum, the ancient city where Milan now stands, served as an important Roman centre in Northern Italy.
