Historical context

Magnus Maximus was Roman emperor in the West from 383 to 388, having usurped the throne from Gratian. Originally proclaimed emperor in Britannia in 383 and in Gaul the following year, his control was initially balanced against Valentinian II in Italy. However, his ambitions led him to invade Italy in 387, preceding his final defeat by Theodosius I at the Battle of Poetovio in 388.

This silver siliqua was produced at the mint of Mediolanum, representing a coin denomination issued in the Roman Empire from the fourth century. The obverse features the bust of Magnus Maximus with the imperial legend "D N MAG MA-XIMVS P F AVG", while the reverse bears the legend "VIRTVS RO-MANORVM" and depicts Roma seated facing on a throne, holding a globe and a reversed spear. Related siliquae bearing the same reverse design were also struck at Aquileia.
