Historical context

Eugenius served as Western Roman emperor from 392 until 394, though he was never recognised by Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius I. Struck between AD 393 and AD 394, this solidus was produced at Mediolanum, an important city in Northern Italy that had earlier developed into an informal capital of the Western Roman Empire. Eugenius sought to rally Western backing by restoring pagan monuments such as the Altar of Victory, but his reign ended when he was defeated by Theodosius at the Battle of the Frigidus and executed.
