Historical context
Valentinian I governed the Roman Empire as emperor from 364 to 375, having appointed his brother Valens in 364 to rule over the Eastern half while he maintained control of the West. Mediolanum, the ancient city where Milan now stands, served as an important Roman centre in Northern Italy and had earlier become the capital of the Western Roman Empire under Maximian. This gold solidus, depicting Valens, was struck at Mediolanum between AD 364 and AD 367 under Valentinian I.
