Historical context
Gratian ruled as emperor of the Western Roman Empire from 367 to 383, having inherited the western realm upon the death of his father, Valentinian I, in 375. He nominally shared western governance with his infant half-brother, Valentinian II, who was acclaimed emperor at the age of four and remained a junior co-ruler until Gratian's death in 383.
