Historical context
Following the early death of Jovian, Valentinian I was proclaimed Roman emperor in 364. After briefly ruling the empire as a whole from February to March 364, he appointed his younger brother Valens as co-emperor, assigning him governance of the eastern half of the empire while Valentinian retained the West. This bronze coin, bearing the portrait of Valentinian I, was struck between AD 364 and AD 367 under Valens at Nicomedia, an ancient city in modern Turkey that had previously served as the eastern capital of the Roman Empire under Diocletian during the Tetrarchy.
