Historical context

Valens ruled as Roman emperor from 364 to 378, having been appointed co-emperor by his elder brother Valentinian I to govern the eastern half of the Roman Empire. During his reign, he faced challenges including the usurper Procopius, conflict with Persia along the eastern frontier, and Gothic warfare that culminated in his defeat and death at the Battle of Adrianople.

This siliqua was struck under the authority of Valens at the Nicomedia mint, but features the obverse bust and title of his brother and co-emperor, "D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG". The siliqua was a small, thin silver coin produced from the fourth century, modernly applied to pieces valued in relation to the gold solidus. The reverse carries the inscription "VOT/V/MVLT/X" enclosed within a laurel wreath.
