Historical context

Valens was Roman emperor from 364 to 378, appointed by his elder brother Valentinian I to govern the eastern half of the Roman Empire. During his reign, he managed internal unrest, including the rebellion of the usurper Procopius, while conducting military campaigns along the Danube against the Goths and addressing conflicts on the eastern frontier against Persia, the Saracens, and the Isaurians.

Produced at the eastern mint of Nicomedia, this bronze AE1 piece was struck under Valens' authority. The coin presents the obverse legend "D N VALEN-S P F AVG" paired with a diademed, draped, and cuirassed imperial portrait. Its reverse displays the legend "RESTITVTOR-REIPVBLICAE", framing a depiction of the emperor holding a labarum and Victory on a globe, symbols commonly employed in official imperial coinage to present the ruler as the restorer of the Roman state.
