Historical context

Valentinian I served as Roman emperor from 364 to 375, having been proclaimed following the early death of Jovian. After ruling the entire empire briefly from February to March 364, he appointed his brother Valens over the East while retaining personal governance of the West and establishing the Valentinian dynasty. This silver siliqua was produced at the mint of Rome between AD 364 and AD 367, during the period when Valentinian conducted campaigns along the Rhine and Danube frontiers.
