Historical context

Gratian ruled as emperor of the Western Roman Empire from 367 until his death in 383. The eldest son of Valentinian I, he was raised to Augustus during childhood and inherited the western realm in 375, sharing imperial power nominally with his infant half-brother Valentinian II. Gratian appointed Theodosius I to rule the Eastern Roman Empire in 379 following the death of Valens.

Struck at the Rome mint, this coin is a siliqua, a small, thin silver denomination produced in the Roman Empire from the fourth century onwards. The obverse presents the imperial portrait alongside the title "D N GRATIA-NVS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the legend "VRBS-ROMA" and depicts Roma seated on a throne, holding a spear and Victory resting on a globe.
