Solidus in gold struck at Sirmium under Valentinian II, AD 378–AD 383, catalogued as RIC IX Sirmium 10B. Obverse: Bust of Theodosius I, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Two emperors, of equal size, seated facing on throne, together holding globe. Behind and Between them a Victory with outspread wings; below, a palm-branch. The emperors have both legs draped. Obverse legend: D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG. Reverse legend: VICTOR-IA AVGG●.

Historical context

The solidus had been introduced in the early 4th century as a gold coin of approximately 4.45 grams that became the principal gold currency in late antiquity. Valentinian II was raised to imperial office at age four in 375, ruling the Western Roman Empire alongside his half-brother Gratian, while Theodosius I governed the East from 379.
