Historical context

This gold solidus was struck between AD 393 and AD 395 under Theodosius I, who reigned as Roman emperor from 379 to 395 and became the last emperor to govern the entire Roman Empire. It was produced at the mint of Sirmium, an ancient city on the Sava river that had been proclaimed one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire in 293 AD. The solidus denomination was introduced in the early 4th century to replace the aureus, maintaining a standard weight of about 4.45 grams as the primary late Roman gold coin.
