Historical context

Valentinian I, the founder of the Valentinian dynasty, was proclaimed Roman emperor in 364 following the death of Jovian. After governing the entire empire briefly from February to March of 364, he appointed his brother Valens to oversee the East while retaining control of the West. This silver siliqua dates to AD 364 and was struck at Sirmium, a major imperial city located in Pannonia along the Sava river.
