Historical context

Valentinian I served as Roman emperor from 364 to 375 and founded the Valentinian dynasty. Following the death of Jovian, Valentinian was proclaimed emperor and governed the empire as a whole briefly in 364 before appointing his brother Valens as co-emperor to rule the Eastern half of the Roman Empire, while Valentinian retained control of the West.

This bronze AE3 piece was issued under the authority of Valentinian I from the mint at Sirmium. The obverse depicts the bust of his co-ruler Valens, styled as pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed, accompanied by the inscription "D N VALEN-S P F AVG". The reverse illustrates the emperor standing facing, looking right, while holding a labarum and a Victory on a globe, accompanied by the legend "RESTITV-TOR REIP".
