Historical context
Sirmium, situated on the Sava river in the province of Pannonia, became a provincial capital and was proclaimed one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire in 293 AD. Following the death of Valentinian I in 375, his eldest son Gratian shared rule of the Western Roman Empire with his infant half-brother Valentinian II, who was acclaimed emperor in Pannonia at the age of four. Valentinian II remained the junior western co-ruler to Gratian until Gratian was killed in 383 by the usurper Magnus Maximus.
