Historical context
Proclaimed emperor in 364 following the death of Jovian, Valentinian I governed the entire Roman Empire briefly before selecting his brother Valens as co-emperor to rule the eastern provinces. Valentinian retained control of the Western half of the empire, where the mint of Siscia operated. Struck between AD 364 and AD 367, this gold solidus portrays Valens, representing the imperial authority shared between the brothers.
