Solidus in gold struck at Siscia under Valentinian I, AD 364–AD 367, catalogued as RIC IX Siscia 2A. Obverse: Bust of Valentinian I, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Two emperors seated facing on throne, the one on right holding mappa and the two together holding globe. Behind and between them a Victory with outspread wings. Obverse legend: D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG. Reverse legend: VICTOR-IA AVGG.

Historical context

Valentinian I served as Roman emperor from 364 until 375, having been elevated following the death of Jovian. After governing the entire empire briefly between February and March 364, he appointed his brother Valens as co-emperor to oversee the East, while he retained control of the Western Roman Empire and waged campaigns along the Rhine and Danube frontiers. This solidus was issued between AD 364 and AD 367, representing the highly pure gold denomination introduced in the early 4th century to replace the aureus.
