Historical context

Theodosius I was Roman emperor from 379 to 395 and the last emperor to rule the entire Roman Empire. He was the father of Arcadius and Honorius, who later ruled separate courts in the east and the west, continuing the late Roman practice of rule by multiple emperors.

Struck at the Siscia mint under the authority of Theodosius I, this bronze piece carries the AE4 designation, a modern numismatic convention applied to the smallest bronze issues of the era. The obverse depicts his son Arcadius accompanied by the title "D N ARCADIVS P F AVG", while the reverse displays "VOT/V" enclosed within a wreath.
