Historical context

Valentinian II was raised to the imperial office in AD 375 at the age of four by military commanders following the death of his father, Valentinian I. In the western part of the Roman Empire, he initially served as a junior co-ruler alongside his older half-brother Gratian, while the eastern territories were administered by their uncle Valens. This silver siliqua was struck in Central Macedonia at the mint of Thessalonica, an ancient city founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, during the early years of Valentinian II's reign between AD 375 and AD 378.
