Historical context

Valens was appointed co-emperor by his elder brother Valentinian I in 364 to govern the eastern half of the Roman Empire, ruling until he was killed at the Battle of Adrianople against the invading Goths in 378. Following the death of Valentinian I in AD 375, his four-year-old son Valentinian II was proclaimed western emperor by military commanders, ruling as a junior co-ruler with his half-brother Gratian while Valens continued to oversee the East. Struck between AD 375 and AD 378 under Valentinian II at Thessalonica, this silver coin depicts Valens, who was the young western emperor's paternal uncle.
