Historical context

Theodosius I was appointed eastern Roman emperor in 379 following the death of Valens at the Battle of Adrianople. Valentinian II, who had been raised to imperial office in 375 as a child, fled to Thessalonica alongside his family in 387 after the usurper Magnus Maximus invaded Italy. Theodosius aided Valentinian II by defeating Maximus in battle and restoring him to power in 388. Struck between 383 and 388 at the Thessalonica mint, this bronze coin was issued under Theodosius depicting his western co-emperor.
