Historical context

Theodosius I ruled as Roman emperor from 379 to 395, initially governing the eastern provinces after being appointed by Gratian following the death of Valens at the Battle of Adrianople. During his reign, he ended the Gothic War in 382, established Nicene Christianity through the First Council of Constantinople in 381, and ultimately became the last emperor to rule the entire Roman Empire.

This gold solidus was struck at the Thessalonica mint under Theodosius's authority. Introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, the solidus was a highly pure gold denomination that served as the principal gold coin of commerce from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the inscription "D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG", while the reverse depicts Constantinopolis seated facing on a throne adorned with lions' heads, holding a sceptre and globe with her right foot resting on a prow, accompanied by the legend "CONCORDI-A AVGGG".
