Solidus in gold struck at Trier under Eugenius, AD 392–AD 394, catalogued as RIC IX Treveri 101. Obverse: Bust of Eugenius, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Two emperors, nimbate, seated facing, together holding globe. Behind and between them the upper portion of a Victory with outspread wings; between them below, a palm-branch (but the dress covers both legs). Obverse legend: D N EVGENI-VS P F AVG. Reverse legend: VICTOR-IA AVGG.

Historical context

Eugenius ruled as Western Roman emperor from 392 to 394, though he remained unrecognised by the Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius I. Capitalising on western discontent with Theodosius's religious measures against pagans, Eugenius restored the Altar of Victory and renovated the Temple of Venus and Roma before being defeated, captured, and executed following the Battle of the Frigidus. This gold solidus was produced under his authority between AD 392 and AD 394 at Trier, an ancient Roman capital on the Moselle.
