Historical context

Eugenius was a Western Roman emperor who ruled from 392 until his death on 6 September 394, though he remained unrecognised by the Eastern emperor Theodosius I. A Christian who gained support from pagan discontent regarding Theodosius' religious policies, he restored the Altar of Victory, renovated the Temple of Venus and Roma, and replaced administrators with loyal supporters before his capture and execution following the Battle of the Frigidus.

Struck at the mint of Trier, this silver coin belongs to the small, thin denomination modern numismatists designate as a siliqua, a series first produced in the fourth century. The obverse presents Eugenius with the imperial legend "D N EVGENI-VS P F AVG", while the reverse bears the legend "VIRTVS RO-MANORVM" and depicts Roma seated upon a cuirass, holding a reversed spear and Victory resting on a globe.
