Historical context

Gratian ruled as emperor of the Western Roman Empire from 367 to 383, having inherited the West after the death of his father Valentinian I in 375.

Struck at the mint of Trier under the authority of Gratian, this silver siliqua names and portrays his uncle Valens with the obverse inscription "D N VALEN-S P F AVG". The siliqua was a small, thin silver denomination produced from the fourth century, modernly applied to pieces equated in value to a twenty-fourth of a gold solidus. The reverse design features the inscription "VOT/X/MVLT/XV" enclosed within a laurel wreath.
