Historical context

Gratian ruled as emperor of the Western Roman Empire from 367 to 383, having inherited the realm upon the death of his father, Valentinian I, in 375. He nominally shared the administration with his younger half-brother Valentinian II and later appointed Theodosius I to rule the East in 379. This gold solidus, an imperial denomination introduced in the early 4th century, was produced at Trier, a former Tetrarchic capital located in Gaul.
