Historical context

Magnus Maximus was proclaimed Roman emperor in Britannia in 383 after usurping the throne from Gratian, subsequently establishing his authority across Gaul. He ruled the Western Roman Empire until 388, when his invasion of Italy prompted a confrontation with Theodosius I that ended with Maximus's defeat at the Battle of Poetovio and his execution. The solidus, introduced in the early fourth century as a replacement for the aureus, was a highly pure gold coin that formed the standard denomination of Roman imperial commerce.
