Historical context

Valentinian II was proclaimed western Roman emperor at the age of four in AD 375 following the death of his father, Valentinian I. After the usurper Magnus Maximus invaded Italy in 387, Valentinian II fled to Thessalonica and sought aid from eastern emperor Theodosius I, who defeated the usurper. Restored to power in 388, Valentinian II ruled from Gaul, though authority was largely exercised by his general Arbogast until the emperor's death in 392. This gold aureus was struck between AD 388 and AD 392 at Trier, which had previously served as an imperial capital under the Tetrarchy.
