Historical context
Valentinian II was Roman emperor in the west between AD 375 and 392, having been raised to office at the age of four. After the usurper Magnus Maximus invaded Italy in 387, Theodosius I defeated Maximus and re-installed Valentinian II to govern from Gaul in 388. Trier, originally founded as Augusta Treverorum, served as an imperial residence and capital during the late 3rd and early 4th centuries.
