Historical context

Valentinian II was Roman emperor in the Western Roman Empire between AD 375 and 392. Initially elevated as a junior co-ruler alongside his half-brother Gratian, he was later sidelined by the usurper Magnus Maximus. Following Maximus's defeat by Theodosius I, Valentinian II was restored to power in 388 and ruled from Gaul, where he remained largely under the control of the general Arbogast until his death in 392.

This silver siliqua was produced at the mint of Trier. The siliqua was a small, thin silver denomination struck from the fourth century, modern numismatic convention applying the term to coins valued in relation to the gold solidus. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the inscription "D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG", while the reverse displays Roma seated upon a cuirass holding Victory and a reversed spear, paired with the legend "VIRTVS RO-MANORVM".
